The conference provided a good opportunity for environmentalists from Vietnam, Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Australia and India to share knowledge, information, technologies and scientific research on hydrology and water resources in the global context of climate change. The event also aimed to boost scientific cooperation in hydrology and water resources and contribute opinions on the major topics for the 2008-2013 period, put forward by the International Hydrological Programme. In his speech, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Nguyen Thai Lai, said that as host country, Vietnam will take initiatives and contribute to the APHW’s joint efforts to cope with climate change. Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, who also heads the National Water Resources Council, made this statement on January 19 at a Hanoi conference with the theme ‘Water resources and sustainable development’. To deal with this challenge, Mr Hai said, the Vietnamese Government has adopted an effective and sustainable development strategy to exploit water resources economically and has enacted a Law on Water Resources. Mr Hai added that the government endorsed a national strategy on these resources toward 2020, drew up a programme of national goals on addressing climate change and is seeking to expand international cooperation in managing water resources. The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nguyen Thai Lai, told the conference that Vietnam’s water reserve, some 11,000m3 per capita annually, is average for the world. But he added that this amount is not equally distributed and is being seriously affected by a shortage of construction works for its regulation, by unplanned and wasteful usage and by pollution. Mr Lai emphasized that the first and foremost solution to the problem is to use water in a rational and economical way, which must go hand in hand with the protection and development of water supplies. He underscored the expansion of international cooperation as a means of maximizing resources for improving state management of water supplies. Nearly 20 speeches by local and foreign managers and scientists assessed the situation of water resources in Vietnam and the impact of polluted water sources on community health as well as proposed technological methods of treating water. He made the call at the opening ceremony of the “Green Biz 2009 – Europe’s green business methods for Vietnam” conference in Hanoi. Vietnam is one of the countries hardest hit by climate change and rising sea levels and the Government is adamant that socio-economic development must go together with environmental protection. Top on the agenda of “Green Biz 2009” will be several in-depth discussions on the development of green business in Vietnam including investment in clean energy sources, the management of sustainable water sources and the social responsibilities of businesses. The Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, Alain Cany, said the initiative will be of vital assistance to Vietnam to conduct research in environmental challenges in the fields of energy, water supplies, transportation and construction. The Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nguyen Thai Lai, said that the Vietnamese government has so far deployed a range of programmes to encourage businesses to introduce clean production methods and use energy efficiently. In the framework of the two-day “Green Biz 2009” conference, 50 leading European companies that develop green infrastructures took part in an exhibition to promote their environmentally friendly business methods.
