Competitors, aged between 10 and 18, will compete in both singles and doubles events during the six-day tournament for total cash-prizes of VND171 million (US$8,500).
The top 16 boys as well as the top 8 girls from each age group will qualify for the National Top Teenagers Tennis Championship to be held in Hue City on August 2-7.
"The tournament is a big arena for teenagers to hone their skills. The Viet Nam Tennis Federation will recruit the top seeded players for the national youth and senior teams as well as give players a chance to train abroad," said Phan Thi Thu Ha, an official from the VTF.
The tournament, sponsored by British insurance giant Prudential since 2003, has produced a clutch of tennis stars including Dac Tien, Minh Thinh (U-10), Ly Hoang Nam (U-12) and Ho Huynh Dan Mach (U-14).
Hanoian Tran Nam Son and Nguyen Ngoc Minh from HCM City, who shone at the 2009 tournament, both took part in training courses at the Cornella International Tennis Centre in Spain.
Le Nguyen Thuy Trang from HCM City also received a scholarship to attend Washburn University in the US last year.
The tournament has also nurtured other top Vietnamese tennis players such as Nguyen Thuy Dung, Ngo Viet Ha and teenage star Nguyen Hoang Thien. — VNS
