Nguyen Thi Lua becomes the ninth Vietnamese athlete to secure an official ticket to the London Olympics
Lua defeated Chov Sotheara from Cambodia 11-0 in the first round of the women’s freestyle 48kg category, and then overcame Nurmatova Mikhrniso from Kyrgyzstan 5-1 in the semi-finals to enter the finals.
Despite losing 0-2 to Korean rival Kim Hyung-Joo in the decisive game, Lua is still eligible to participate in the London Olympics this July because, as regulated, both silver and gold medalists in each event at this qualifying round will secure official Olympic tickets.
Lua is among the five Vietnamese wrestlers to compete at the tournament including Nguyen Huy Ha (55kg), Can Tat Du (74kg), Tran Thi Dieu Ninh (55kg) and Luong Thi Quyen (63kg).
In addition to the Astana event, Vietnamese wrestlers will have two more chances to try for tickets to the world’s biggest sporting event at qualifying tournaments in China from April 27 to 29 and Finland from May 4 to 6.
So far, nine Vietnamese athletes have won official places to the 2012 Olympics: Phan Thi Ha Thanh and Pham Phuoc Hung (gymnastics), Le Huynh Chau and Chu Hoang Dieu Linh (taekwondo), Van Ngoc Tu (judo), Hoang Xuan Vinh and Le Thi Hoang Ngoc (shooting), Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc (athletics), and Nguyen Thi Lua (wrestling).
