Ho Chi Minh City will start construction of its first metro on August 28 to connect District 1’s Ben Thanh Market with District 9’s Suoi Tien Amusement Park, authorities said Wednesday.
The metro route will be 19.7 kilometers long and consist of a 2.2-kilometer underground section with three stations, and a 17.5-kilometer above-ground section with 11 elevated stations.
It will go past HCMC’s District 1, Binh Thanh, 2, 9, and Binh Duong Province’s Di An Town.
The Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien is one of the six urban railway routes to be built in Ho Chi Minh City.
Funding for the VND47 trillion (US$2.25 billion) project will come from Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Vietnam’s state budget.
The project is expected to be completed in 2017 and put into operation one year later.
