Hanoi police have said they are investigating a local woman accused of appropriating over VND5 billion (US$280,000) from the US-based Associated Press news agency.
A staff working for the news agency’s permanent office in Hanoi, 36-year-old Nguyen Thi Van Huong allegedly made 17 fake checks to draw over VND6.7 billion ($375,000), but sent only VND1.5 billion ($84,000) to the office’s bank account, according to preliminary investigations.
The investigation was launched after the AP’s office sent a written complaint to the local police, accusing Huong, who has worked for them since July 2007, of changing the amount of money to be drawn on checks after having them signed by her office chief, local newspaper Cong An Nhan Dan (People’s Police) reported on Tuesday.
Huong is still at large, the police said.
