Vietnam earned one more berth at the upcoming London Olympic Games for women’s weighlifting, according to an announcement by the International Weightlifting Federation on June 10.
Weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thuy
The good news came to Vietnam because some athletes from other Asian countries were found to be doping and were subsequently excluded from participating in the 2012 Games.
Nguyen Thi Thuy was chosen for the Olympic slot in the women’s 53kg category. Thuy finished fifth at the 2012 Asian Weightlifting Championships in the Republic of Korea last April, with a total lift of 190kg.
Vietnam’s first Olympic ticket in weightlifting went to Tran Le Quoc Toan, who took silver in the men’s 56kg category at the same event with a total lift of 279kg.
So far, Vietnam has 16 official tickets to the world’s biggest sporting event in gymnastics, taekwondo, badminton, shooting, judo, wrestling, track and field, fencing, weightlifting and rowing. Nhan Dan
