Military-run telecom firm Viettel yesterday dismissed a document posted online that claims all Viettel cell phone numbers will be changed in their initial digits, saying it was fake.

The public has been agog recently following the posting of the document which claims the change will take place on August 1.
Viettel, Vietnam’s largest mobile phone service provider in terms of subscribers, now has10-digit numbers starting with 097 and 098 and 11-digit numbers beginning with 016x.
According to the fake document, the 10-digit numbers will be changed to 11-digit numbers starting with 0987 and 0988, while the 11-digit numbers will become 12-digit numbers beginning with 0986x.

The company said it is coordinating with competent agencies to track down the origin of the fake notice which also has a counterfeit Viettel stamp and forged signature of Nguyen Manh Hung, its general director.
Hoang Son, director of Viettel Telecom, which has 40 million cell-phone subscribers, said: “Subscribers will be informed of any change through the media.”
