A non la (conical hat) created by artisan Thai Do from Hue City was acknowledged as the biggest conical hat in Vietnam by the Vietnam Record Book at a ceremony held at Non La Restaurant in HCMC’s District 1 last Saturday.

The hat has a diameter of 2.74 meters, height of 1.6 meters and circumference of 8.62 meters. It was made from 800 leafs chosen from 14,000 leafs from Nam Dong District’s forest which is 100km from Hue City. It took the artisan and ten workers 40 days to finish the 30kg hat.

“The process required us to be extremely meticulousness to have flexible and steady hat brims. A normal hat will have a model frame but with this special hat we had to make a huge structure consisting of 24 bamboo pillars to hold the hat,” said Do at the event.

It is also interesting to note that you can see on the hat famous landscapes in Hue City - Huong River, Phu Van Lau, Thien Mu Pagoda and Truong Tien Bridge - and four poem sentences composed by the artisan when looked at under a light.

“We hope that through this hat people will know more about the traditional craft of Vietnamese people in general and the beautiful landscapes of Hue City in particular,” Tran Van Tuan from Nu Cuoi Viet media and entertainment company limited, who owns the record-breaking hat and the restaurant.

The giant hat will be on display at Non La Restaurant, 19 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, District 1, HCMC.
