(VOV) - Vietnamese born Cambodians in Kandal province convened its first congress for the 2011-2014 tenure.

Kandal is a large province surrounding Phnom Penh capital and bordering Vietnam’s An Giang province. It is home to many Vietnamese nationals who earn a living from fishing along the Mekong River and other small crafts.

Since its establishment in 2004, the provisional Vietnamese association in Kandal has united Vietnamese nationals in the province and protected their legitimate rights. It has underlined the need to elect an executive board to finalise and expand its operation there.

“The association will work closely with the Vietnamese Embassy, the Vietnamese Society in Cambodia and relevant authorities to protect its members’ legitimate rights to help them reside, study and work in a longer term in Kandal,” said Nguyen Thanh Tai, president of the newly-elected 15 member executive board.

Earlier, Vietnamese nationals in Phnom Penh capital, Kampong Chhnang and Prey Vieng provinces also held congresses to institutionalise their organisations.
