A Vietnam-US literature forum will be held in the former imperial city of Hue on March 9, the Vietnam Writers Association (VWA) announced on March 7.

The event aims to mark the 20th anniversary of the bilateral ties between the VWA and the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequence, a US NGO that gathers many big names in the US literacy circle such as Grace Paley, Larry Heineman Tim O’Brien, Bruce Weigl among others.

A number of poets and writers from Vietnam and the US will assess the translation and introduction of Vietnamese literature to US readers over the past two decades and discuss cooperation in introducing the two countries’ literature in the future.

President of the VWA, poet Huu Thinh said the forum is an impressive exchange for not only war veteran writers but also young writers.

In the past 20 years, the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequence has cooperated with the VWA to translate and present works by Vietnamese writers to US readers.

The centre has also helped bring 100 Vietnamese writers, artists and cultural researchers to the US to promote the image of a Vietnam in peace to the American people.

On this occasion, the VWA Publishing House will translate and publish a collection of poems from US poets on Vietnam’s culture and war.
