Nhan Dan – Vietnam’s U-23 men’s football team missed the chance to join Malaysia in the finals after suffering a humiliating 2-0 loss against hosts Indonesia in their semi-final match at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium yesterday.
U-23 Indonesia rapidly dominated the game from the starting whistle and produced a series of attacks on the Vietnamese side, forcing goalie Buu Ngoc to make several fine saves in the 17th, 18th and 19th minutes.
In the 37th minute, Trong Hoang chipped a delightful pass to put Dinh Tung into a face-to-face situation with goalkeeper Meiga, but his final shot was not strong enough to get past the Indonesian goalkeeper.
In the second half, Indonesia continued to take control of the game and intensified their offense aiming to start the scoring. It was not until the 61st minute that striker Patrich scored the opener for the hosts with a beautiful curler that found the bottom right corner of the Vietnamese goal.
Just one minute before the final whistle, Bonai blasted a cunning shot into the top left corner of the net to double the hosts' advantage and wrap up the semi-finals with Indonesia prevailing 2-0.
This victory means U-23 Indonesia will face defending SEA Games champions Malaysia in the finals while U-23 Vietnam will take on U-23 Myanmar in a play-off for the bronze at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium tomorrow.
