Vietnam receives 6 million tourists in 2011

Vietnam will receive more than 6 million international tourists in 2011, a jump of more than 1 million visitors over last year, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hoang Tuan Anh, told Tuoi Tre Newspaper last Saturday.

Asian tourists made up most of the total visitors to Vietnam in 2011, Anh added, with Chinese nationals leading the number.

Air travel still stops tourists’ choice of transportation at 88 percent, followed by road travel at 10 percent and cruise ships at 2 percent.

On Monday, the Ministry held a welcoming ceremony for its 6th million visitor, a French tourist named Curvalle Bernard Francois at the UNESCO Heritage Site Ha Long Bay.

Arriving on the luxurious cruise ship SuperStar Aquarius, owned by the Star Cruises Company, Curvalle said this was the first time he and his family had traveled to Vietnam.

After Ha Long the French tourist, along with more than 1,000 passengers and staff on the ship, visited Hue, and is heading toward China’s Hainan Island on Tuesday.

As the 6th million tourist, he will get a free package tour through Hoi An – My Son – Da Nang for two from local travel agency Saigon Tourist.
