Prosecutors in Binh Phuoc Province in southern Vietnam have publicly apologized to nine men who were jailed for 12 to 30 months without evidence for suspected robbery.

The Dong Phu District Procuracy apologized Tuesday to Phan Van Thuong and the day before to the eight others, news website VnExpress reported.

The men have been offered total compensation of more than VND700 million (US$33,600), but Thuong demanded more and there will be further negotiations on June 5.

The men became suspects in a robbery committed in December 2008, and were taken in a month later pending investigations.

Although no evidence was found during the investigation, six of them were detained for a year until their release in January 2010.

But the other three, including Thuong, were not released until August 2011, 18 months after the district court had dropped the case.
