VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam hopes to strengthen ties with Colombia in various fields such as politics, diplomacy, economics, trade, energy, oil and gas, culture, education and tourism.
Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh emphasized this during February 27 talks with his Colombian counterpart, María Ángela Holguin, in Hanoi.

He highly appreciated Colombia’s proposal to create a mechanism and legal foundation for bilateral relations and its decision to send a cultural and art troupe to the 2012 Hue Festival, within the framework of the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
FM Minh also proposed that both sides promote exchange visits at all levels.
Minister Holguin congratulated Vietnam on its recent achievements, adding that the two countries have great potential for cooperation, especially in trade, agriculture, oil and gas, culture, education, and poverty reduction.
Holguin said Colombia is eager to participate in Asia-Pacific economic organisations region and boost Latin America – Southeast Asia cooperation.
During talks, the diplomats informed each other of the current situation in their respective countries and discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. They also agreed to support each other in international organizations and multilateral forums such as the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the FEALAC in order to protect their legitimate interests and increase their status in the region and the world.
After the talks, the two ministers signed an agreement on visa exemptions for official and diplomatic passport holders and a memorandum of understanding on a mechanism for political consultation between the two foreign ministries.
** On the same day, Minister Holguin was also received by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung who affirmed that Vietnam will play an active role in promoting Latin America – Southeast Asia cooperation.
PM Dung said that although bilateral cooperation has developed significantly, it is far from meeting the two countries’ potential. He proposed they sign cooperation agreements in economics, agriculture, investment, oil and gas, education and training.
Holguin said Colombia attaches great importance to strengthening ties with Vietnam and will welcome a delegation of Vietnamese businesses to the South American country for an economic forum.
