Over 600 distinguished delegates, representing VAPE's 7.5 million members across the country, gathered in Hanoi on September 29 for the association's 4th congress.
According to VAPE’s chairman at its 4th congress, after 14 years of development, the organisation has mobilised nearly VND700 billion for its tasks.
Chairman Nguyen Manh Cam said, "Over the course of 14 years, VAPE has established its presence in 100% of Vietnam's cities and provinces, down to all their districts and communes, and has spread to many villages, offices, enterprises, schools and armed units. VAPE now has a total of over 200,000 branches and thousands of ‘neighbourhoods for promoting education’. The total number of members has reached over 7.5 million."
VAPE has partnered with the education system to build over 9,600 social learning centres in 90% of Vietnam's communes and wards, giving everybody a better chance to study.
VAPE has also attracted sponsorship from many individuals, businesses, organisations and associations, to afford scholarships for 2 to 2.5 million disadvantaged students annually. In total, nearly VND700 billion (USD35 million) has been contributed to help VAPE realise its cause, in addition to items and land to build educational facilities worth millions of dollars more.
At the congress, VAPE reviewed and presented the 10 most memorable events during its 14 years of development. Among them are the phenomenal growth of VAPE's Dan Tri online newspaper, which has become one of the leading online news sources in Vietnam and has developed its English version, DTiNews, bringing Vietnam closer to the international community as well as the global Vietnamese community.
