HCMC - The Vietnam chapter of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) made debut in HCMC last Saturday as the global organization’s first ASEAN chapter to be established.

The major goals of the Vietnam chapter are to advance the growth of the information systems (IS) discipline in Vietnam, set up an IS research infrastructure in the country, and create and maintain a professional identity for IS educators, researchers and professionals, said Nelson Leung, president of the chapter.

Another goal is to prepare the next generation of academics and professionals for a career in IS, Leung told the debut ceremony at RMIT Vietnam, where he serves as a researcher who manages the international university’s academic program in Business Information Systems.

The Vietnam chapter, or VAIS in short, does not charge membership fees additional to those of AIS, nor receive any funds from the AIS headquarters, said Leung. The AIS membership fee is US$13 for academic but is US$125 for professional, he added.

In 2011, the AIS Council approved the proposal of establishing VAIS, making it the first ASEAN chapter.

AIS was founded in 1994 and currently has about 4,000 members from 90 countries, according to the body.
