HA NOI — Despite inclement weather, cyclists battled hard yesterday to complete the second stage of the Return to the Roots race with young cyclist Dinh Quoc Viet of the Domesco Dong Thap 2 team eventually triumphing.
Viet clocked a top speed of 42.593km/h during the 69km stage from Ha Noi to Viet Tri City in the northern province of Phu Tho.
His time for the weather-affected stage was one hour, 37 minutes and 12 seconds.
Le Van Duan of Sai Gon Plant Protection 1, who won the 41km prologue race at Hoan Kiem Lake on Sunday, was the runner-up. ADC-Vinh Long television's Bui Minh Thuy came in third.
Duan's second placing yesterday was enough to ensure he held onto the yellow jersey (best overall time) with a total time of 2:33.18 after two stages.
Nguyen Truong Tai of Domesco Dong Thap 1 and Ho Quynh Van An of An Giang Plant Protection are second and third, respectively.
After gaining 25 points for winning the second stage, Viet also earned the right to don the best sprinter's green jersey with a total points of 30.
The fiercely contested team prize was shared among three teams each with the same combined time of 7:41.06. These were Sai Gon Plant Protection 1, An Giang Plant Protection and Domesco Dong Thap 1.
Today, cyclists will push the pedals in the event's third road race, a 78km dash from Viet Tri City to Tuyen Quang City in the northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the five-stage competition will roll to a stop on Thursday.
The race passes through Ha Noi, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Bac Can and Cao Bang provinces. — VNS
