VN promises $48k to each Olympic gold medalist

Vietnamese athletes competing at the 2012 London Olympic Games will be able to receive awards worth a record VND1 billion, or US$48,000, if they can bring home a gold medal.

The huge award includes VND160 million as regulated by the government, and VND750 million donated by the Petrosetco and Dong Luc Sporting Group, according to the Vietnam Olympic Committee.

Those who grab a silver will also receive at least VND530 million, the committee said.

The Vietnamese gymnastic and track-and-field teams will arrive in London for a 10-day training trip on July 10, while most of the delegation will depart on July 20.

Vietnam, with 18 athletes who will compete at 11 categories during the event, expects to go home with at least one medal.

Head of the delegation Lam Quang Thanh said London 2012 is one of the most impressive Olympic events Vietnam has ever participated in as all of the athletes have won tickets to the tournament through their own efforts, rather than joining under incentives granted to countries with poor sport records.

Thanh added that most of the Vietnamese competitors have been asked to undergo doping tests by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The test results will be announced prior to their competition in London.

“I believe Vietnam will face no incidents related to doping this time,” he said.

Weightlifting and taekwondo are the two most expected sports to bring medals for Vietnam at the tournament.
