VN offers Cambodia ASEAN chair support

Viet Nam supported the theme of Cambodia's Chairmanship of ASEAN 2012, "ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny" and promised to work closely with Cambodia to realise this theme, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Phnom Penh yesterday.

PHNOM PENH — Viet Nam supported the theme of Cambodia's Chairmanship of ASEAN 2012, "ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny" and promised to work closely with Cambodia to realise this theme, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Phnom Penh yesterday.

Meeting with his Cambodian counterpart Samdech Hun Sen on the sidelines of the 20th ASEAN Summit, Dung said Viet Nam believed that Cambodia would successfully chair the summit as well as accomplish its role this year to contribute to building an ASEAN Community in 2015.

Dung thanked the royal Cambodian government for creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community living and working in Cambodia, saying that continual support would contribute to the development of Cambodia as well as boost the friendly and co-operative relations between the two countriess.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen affirmed that his government would create a better environment for Vietnamese residents as well as enterprises.

The two prime ministers said that the bilateral friendship and co-operation had seen in-depth development. They agreed to focus co-operation in economics, trade and investment. They also agreed on preparation for the third investment promotion conference between the two countries in Viet Nam in June.

ASEAN FMs' meeting

Also yesterday, ASEAN Foreign Ministers gathered in Phnom Penh to discuss preparatory work for the 20th ASEAN Summit, which will take place today and tomorrow.

The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) was chaired by Cambodian FM Hor Namhong.

The ministers discussed and passed documents to be submitted to the summit, including the Phnom Penh Declaration, the Joint Declaration on a drug free ASEAN by 2015 and the ASEAN Chair Declaration on ASEAN's 45th founding anniversary.

Cambodian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Kao Kimhon said that ASEAN meetings this time would focus on boosting co-operation, building the ASEAN Community, strengthening the linkage and co-operation within the bloc and partners, as well as regional and international issues.

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh led the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting.

The same day, meetings of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) also took place in Phnom Penh. — VNS
