VN, Colombia look at partnership potential

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin in Ha Noi yesterday and pointed out that the trade partnership between the two countries was modest compared to its potential.

The two sides should soon sign agreements in economics, agriculture, investment, oil and gas, education and training to lay a foundation for the bilateral partnership to thrive, he said.

Dung asked for the two countries to support each other in multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, and to actively implement their signed partnership agreements.

Lauding Colombia's wish to boost the intra-regional partnership between Latin America and Southeast Asia, Dung affirmed that Viet Nam would play an active role in the process Minister Holguin said Colombia attached special importance to co-operation with Viet Nam in a wide range of fields including politics, foreign affairs, economics and others.

She said Colombia wished for Viet Nam's support in consolidating the Latin America-Southeast Asia partnership, particularly in the finance sector.

Holguin said a stronger partnership between the two countries in international forums would help protect each side's legitimate benefits and raise the position of both countries regionally and internationally.

She welcomed Vietnamese businesspeople to visit Colombia and said she would like to hear about poverty reduction experiences from Viet Nam.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh held talks with his Holguin to discuss ways to expand the relations between the two countries.

They signed a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic or service (official) passport holders between the two Governments and a memorandum on building a political reference mechanism between the two foreign ministries. — VNS
