Nhan Dan Online - Five candidates have been shortlisted by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for the post of the new national team coach , following the recent departure of Henrique Calisto.
This was announced by the VFF at their working meeting with the National Coaching Council on March 16.
The five candidates include Hans Juergen Gede and Franz Goetz from Germany, Pierre Lechantre from France, Eduardo Martinho Viganda from Portugal and Steve Sampson from the US.
Prominent amongst them is the Frenchman Pierre Lechantre who helped the Cameroon Olympic team win the championship at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. In the same year, he also led the Cameroon national team to the championship title at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Eduardo Martinho Viganda from Portugal is the favourite to take the post. He has been selected as coach by many football teams from Europe to Asia. He helped the Portuguese Olympic team achieve fourth place at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and won the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup with the Saudi Arabia national team.
