VFF not serious about inviting national coach

Many young coaches have refused to fill the head coach vacancy for the Vietnamese national football squad, saying the Vietnam Football Federation had failed to work with them for the partnership seriously and respectfully.

The National Coach Committee has recently nominated four coaches for VFF to consider for the head coach position of the national football team.

They include three young coaches - Le Huynh Duc, who is currently leading SHB Da Nang club, Nguyen Huu Thang of Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA), and Phan Thanh Hung of Hanoi T&T, and coach Mai Duc Chung.

A free coach who is willing to take the challenges of the national squad, Chung is the most prominent nominee.

Meanwhile, VFF tells the media that the other three have said they cannot leave their work at the football clubs to take the wheel at the national squad.

For their part, however, the coaches have given a different reason.

Unofficial invitations

All of the meetings between VFF and the young coaches so far have been unofficial, they said.

“Former VFF general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan once phoned me when he was still in the position, asking whether I was able to leave the club to take over the national squad,” recalled Coach Thang of SLNA.

However, it was merely a personal conversation, and VFF has never officially put their offer on the table for Thang, nor discussed with his bosses at SLNA about inviting him to the lead the national team, said Thang.

“I do not want to comment further on their working style; Moreover, I am not a jobseeker.”
Meanwhile, Coach Le Huynh Duc of SHB Da Nang also says he has never received an official invitation to take the squad from VFF.

Duc said Nguyen Si Hien, head of the National Coach Committee, had phoned him a few months ago to ask if he was ready to leave for the national squad.

And yet, as inThang’s case, this was just a courtesy phone call, not an official offer, said Duc.

“If VFF really wants to invite a local coach to be part of the national squad, the first thing they should do is to meet with the club bosses,” he said.

“Only when the bosses accept the offer can VFF continue to work officially with the coach.”

For his part, Nguyen Hong Thanh, SLNA manager, said VFF always makes contact with coaches about the position via phone.

“Though leading the national football squad would be a desirable position for most coaches, many of them have refused to take the seat due to the disrespectful working style of VFF,” stated Thanh.

“If they are truly sincere, VFF should be more earnest in inviting the coaches, as well as in setting specific requirements for the post, so that the coach can consider it seriously.”
Meanwhile, VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said it is the coach committee’s job to meet with the coaches, not VFF’s.

VFF can only meet with the nominees after the meeting of the VFF standing committee today, he said.

“Coach Chung is only the nominee from the coach committee, and VFF has the right to choose other coaches for the vacancy,” said Hy.

“Young coaches are still my preference.”
