Unpaid social insurance put at VND700 billion

HCMC – Over 200 HCMC-based enterprises still owe social insurance premiums totaling VND700 billion, said Nguyen Dang Tien, deputy director of HCMC Social Insurance.

Tien said his agency had taken measures to collect premium arrears, such as sending reminders and inspecting those companies, so the arrears had plunged from VND4 trillion to VND700 billion.

However, some business owners have still tried to dodge their obligations, so the agency has sued 209 enterprises last year.

One of the reasons for the surging number of enterprises evading social insurance payments is economic woes, which have sent many businesses becoming insolvent, said the HCMC Social Insurance agency. Employees of such companies will have their benefits lost.

At a recent labor seminar, a representative of the HCMC Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs said the highest permissible fine of VND30 million on social insurance offenses was low, leading to a contempt of social insurance rules.

Therefore, the department suggested adjusting up fines on social insurance violations to 20% of total premium arrears, VND500 million at most, to cope with the situation.
