Tuoi Tre hosts Euro prediction contest

While football betting is prohibited in Vietnam, prediction games are legal and most local newspapers take advantage of major football events like World Cup or Euro to offer readers valuable prizes through their result forecasting contests.

For this year’s Euro, Tuoi Tre is running a prediction game titled “Myvita together with Euro 2012,” which concluded its first stage after the first round of the group stage of Euro ended with the match between co-host Ukraine and Sweden on June 12.

The program is sponsored by Myvita, an effervescent manufacturer.

The first stage of the contest asked readers to predict the final score of the Euro 2012 opener between co-host Poland and Greece, and the player who wins the title “player of the match,” as nominated by UEFA.

Readers participate by cutting out a form from the bottom corner of Tuoi Tre newspaper, filling in their predictions and sending it to the newspaper’s headquarters.

Nguyen Minh Hoang, a reader from Ho Chi Minh City’s District 8, yesterday won the top prize of the first stage, for correctly predicting the 1 – 1 result, and Poland’s midfielder Robert Lewandowski as the “man of the match.”

Tuoi Tre has received 62,537 valid entries, including 345 ones with correct answers. Tuoi Tre therefore had to draw lots to select 16 finalists to receive prizes.

And from the 16 winners, another casting of lots was made to single out Hoang, an officer at the Z751 plant under the Ministry of National Defense’s General Department of Technology, who thus won the highest prize worth VND20 million (US$960), and one year to use Myvita products free of charge.

“I have closely followed information published on Tuoi Tre to make such a precise prediction,” he said at the prize-granting ceremony held yesterday at Tuoi Tre newsroom.

The second runner-up is Vo Thanh Truong, who received VND10 million and six months using the sponsor’s products free of charge.

The 14 remaining readers take the consolation prize – VND1 million and a four-month free usage.

The program is continuing its second stage, with participants required to guess which player will score the most goals after the Euro group stage ends. Entry is open between June 8 and 18.

Virtual betting, real winning

Besides the prediction game, the Vietnamese online version of Tuoi Tre newspaper -- tuoitre.vn – has launched a game titled “Virtual betting, real winning,” where readers register for an account and bet before each game.

As a ‘virtual game,’ no money is actually staked but readers gain points after winning the bets. Readers are automatically awarded 1,000 points after signing up for an account.

The person who accumulates the highest points will get a top prize worth VND15 million.
