Sympathy has been expressed for earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan and readers have sent in donations to them via Tuoi Tre newspaper.
Since March 11, the day when Japan was hit by the disasters, many readers have called to Tuoi Tre via its hotline asking whether the newspaper has launched a campaign to raise money for Japanese victims, as Tuoi Tre previously did the same for flood victims in central Vietnam.
Yesterday alone, Tuoi Tre received more than 200 emails and dozens of phone calls expressing their willingness to contribute to helping victims overcome the disaster.
Most of the readers shared the same thought: Japan is richer than Vietnam, but disaster victims in Japan need as much help as those in Vietnam.
First donation made
On March 15, Tuoi Tre received Le Thanh Thuy Vi, the first reader who donated money to Japanese victims. Handing VND5 million to Tuoi Tre staff, Vy said she had wanted to support Japanese people but had not known where she could entrust the money to.
“I wanted to be the first reader of Tuoi Tre to give support to the disaster’s victims in Japan. I hope many other readers will do the same.”
Tuoi Tre later received VND2 million from two men, Minh Tuan and Huy Nguyen from Tan Binh District.
Yesterday noon, a woman came to Tuoi Tre office and handed VND1.7 million as her donation to Japanese victims. She refused to disclose her personal details.
A moment later, another reader, Thien Lam, at 43 Ho Van Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, donated US$20. “It is not much, but it shows my sympathy for the victims,” Lam said.
