Traditional craft thrives in Chuong village

Chuong village in Hanoi’s outlying district of Thanh Oai is famous across Vietnam for making conical hats. Local villagers have preserved the craft for more than three centuries.

People from neighbouring provinces gather in the village’s market held on the 4th, 10th, 14th, 20th, 24th and 30th days of every lunar month for trading activity.

The market day starts at 06.00am and lasts around two hours. Only hats and their materials are sold at the market.

Trading is so busy that the Temple’s yard is selected as a marketplace.

The area besides the well also becomes a meeting place of sellers and buyers.

Sorting out palm leaves – the main material for making conical hats.

Selecting the brim of the hat.

The market is packed with sellers and buyers as soon as it opens.

Transactions take place inside and outside the house.

This elderly villager hopes the craft will continue to
be preserved for generations
