For the first time, tra fish is on the list of the US’s top ten most popular seafood products in 2009 , according to the Vietnamese Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP).
It ranked 10th on the annual list of the 10 most popular seafood products released by the US National Fisheries Institute on September 9.
Luong Le Phuong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that, because tra fish is one of Vietnam’s major exports, the ministry has introduced measures to strictly control its quality from farming to processing and marketing.
According to VASEP, Vietnamese seafood exports to the US reached US$435 million in the first seven months of this year, of which tra fish accounted for US$80.8 million, up 14% from the same period last year, with a volume of over 26,000 tonnes.
However, the US Department of Commerce has made a decision on anti-dumping tax based on the administrative review of tra fish imported from Vietnam between August 2008 and July 2009, which has resulted in Vietnamese seafood exporters facing higher tariffs.
Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice Chairman of VASEP, said that the unreasonable tariffs have caused many Vietnamese businesses to suffer heavy losses and it will be harder to export tra fish to the US in the near future. (VNA)
