Tra Vinh province was established in 1899 and merged with Vinh Long (founded in 1832) to become Cuu Long province in 1976. In 1992, Cuu Long was divided back into Tra Vinh and Vinh Long provinces.
Since their re-establishment, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long have gained many socio-economic achievements, ensured national security and defence, and improved the living conditions of local people.
Tra Vinh saw continual development in the following two decades with average economic growth of 11%. Its gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 13.36% in 2011, and per capita income reached VND17.137 million, 8.5 times higher than in 1992. All communes of the province are connected to the national electricity grid and 91% of households have access to clean water sources.
During the 20 years after its re-establishment, Vinh Long has achieved remarkable results in many fields and its economy has grown by 8.7% annually. Last year, its GDP growth was five times higher than in 1992 rate and per capita income reached VND28.24 million, 18 times higher than in 1992. The annual production values of its agro-forestry-fisheries, industry-construction and service sectors have also increased 5.4%, 14.58% and 11.02 %, respectively.
