Tien Minh, who has just regained his top ten place in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings, easily overcame world No. 89 Prannoy 21-6 in the first set before winning the second set with a score of 22-20.
Minh will battle Singapore’s world No. 62 Yong Zhao Ashton Chen for the first time ever, in the next round today.

On the same day, two other Vietnamese representatives Vu Thi Trang and Nguyen Thi Sen failed to make it through to the main round after losing their respective women’s singles qualifiers to Chinese Taiwan’s Pei Hsin Chiang and Thailand’s Busanan Ongbumrungpan.
