PANO - Despite a scorching day, thousands of visitors flocked to the Giong Temple Relic Site in Phu Dong Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi to take part in the Giong Festival 2011 on May 11th, the 9th day of the lunar April. Phu Dong Commune is the native town of legendary hero Phu Dong Thien Vuong.

The Festival saw the participation of five villages of Phu Duc, Phu Dong, Dong Vien in Phu Dong Commune, Dong Xuyen in Dang Xa Commune, and Hoi Xa in Phuc Loi Ward, Long Bien District.

After the flag-parading ceremony from the Temple of the Holy Mother to the Upper Temple, there was a battle festival to feature troops, led by St. Giong, defeating aggressors.

Along with various traditional rituals, other public artistic shows and folk games also entertained spectators.

Traditional Giong Festival is among the most typical festivals in the North. UNESCO recognised it as an intangible cultural heritage of mankind in November 2010.
