HCMC - Lam Son Thanh Hoa won the National Super Cup for the first time after defeating powerhouse SHB Danang 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out at Ninh Binh Stadium in northern Ninh Binh Province on Saturday, picking up VND150 million in cash.

Vietnamese League champions Danang controlled the game in the first minutes while Thanh Hoa played defensively and relied on rare counter attacks, but Thanh Hoa surprisingly took the lead in the 20th minute. Tostao opened for Thanh Hoa after receiving the ball from Da Silva in a quick counter-attack.

Danang created more attacks in search of a goal and dominated ball possession before Gaston Merlo leveled for Danang in the 32nd minute.

Despite strong attacks, Danang created scoring chances in the second half but failed to cash in, leaving the score 1-1 upon the referee’s whistle at the end of regulation. The game was settled by the penalty shoot-out.

Kankam, Phuoc Tu, Da Silva and Quang Vinh scored for Thanh Hoa while Danang midfielders Hai Lam and Phuoc Vinh failed to net their kicks.

SHB Danang received VND70 million in cash in the losing effort.

Last year, Becamex Binh Duong won the National Football Super Cup 2008 after trouncing relegated Hanoi ACB 4-0 at Go Dau Stadium in the southern province of Binh Duong. The Super Cup was organized for the first time in 1998.

The new football season started with the Super Cup game between the winners of the National Football Championship, also called V-League, and the winners of the National Cup 2009, The Cong.

The Cong football club were the National Cup 2009 champions but the Defense Ministry decided to dismiss The Cong and transferred the title to the Viettel Group last November.

Then Viettel sold 18 players of The Cong and the team’s seat at V-League 2010 to Thanh Hoa. Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa showed poor performance in the V-League last year and dropped to the First Division Tournament.

As a result, Thanh Hoa has two football teams, Lam Son Thanh Hoa with 18 players of The Cong, which will play at V-League 2010 and compete in the Super Cup this year, and the old Thanh Hoa team to play at the First Division Tournament 2010.

However, Thanh Hoa withdrew from First Division 2010 due to lack of funding. The club has decided to withdraw from the First Division Tournament to focus on its investment in the V-League.

Both the V-League and the First Division Tournament 2010 will open on January 30. VFF has decided not to replace Thanh Hoa, so the event will have only 13 teams, according to the V-League organizing board.

The First Division Tournament 2010 is scheduled to finish on August 21. The two top teams will join V-League 2011. The third team will have a play-off match against the 12th team of V-League 2010 for a seat in V-League 2011. The team at the bottom will fall to the Second Division Tournament.
