Dong Bang Temple (Duc Vua Temple) was built by King Due Vuong to worship his father Bat Hai Dong Dinh, who made a great contribution to the nation’s liberation.

The temple, located in An Le Commune, Quynh Phu District in Thai Binh Province, is a popular destination, luring visitors to the ancient architecture, the tranquility of the sanctuary and the splendid surroundings.

Lying next to Mai Diem River and surrounded by immense green rice fields, the temple is one of the nation’s most beautiful landscapes and it is also a place to celebrate national heroes such as Tran Hung Dao and Tran Quoc Tuan.

The relic is a complex of many small temples and towers, of which the main temple is called Duc Vua Temple and the others are Sinh, De Nhi, De Tam, Dieu and De Bat temples. Covering an area of 11,000 square meters, the temples are striking amidst the romantic surroundings.

There are many antiques from the Ly to Nguyen dynasties in the temple such as ancestral tablets, wooden works, parallel sentences and documents as well as bas-reliefs. The temples are also full of lively ambiance with chau van (ritual music) performances, but its purpose was to hypnotize people who were estranged from the spirits through musical airs, rhythms and lyrics in combination with hau dong, a traditional cultural activity of locals.

Therefore, the temple is considered a venue to preserve old customs, art and rituals, giving an insight into ancient culture for younger generations.

The route to the temple is not easy. Departing from Hanoi, guests will pass Nam Dinh City and then Haiphong City, and at the intersection of Dong Hai Canal in Quynh Phu District, Thai Binh Province, travelers will take a left turn to An Le Commune for one kilometer to reach their destination.

The Dong Bang Temple Festival is held annually on August 20 of the lunar calendar, however, it is blanked in smoke and the fragrance of incense welcomes visitors on a daily basis.
