T&T Hanoi hammered hosts Binh Duong 7-1 on Monday at Go Dau Stadium to accompany Binh Duong to the semifinals of the U21 National Football Tournament.
In the other match that would have decided the second team in Group A to go on the semis, Ho Chi Minh City, which needed to win by a margin of more than two goals and hope that Hanoi would lose by at least one goal, lost its match to Khanh Hoa 0-1 to bow out of the tournament.
Binh Duong started the match with two wins over Khanh Hoa and Ho Chi Minh City under their belt and a berth in the semis of the 13th Thanh Nien-sponsored national football event.
The Hanoi team, participating in the final rounds of the contest for the first time, only needed a draw to progress but coach Truong Viet Hoang and his players did much better.
The capital city side played attacking football instead of counterattacking as in previous matches.
With the dynamic Quang Tinh and Van Hoan in the forefront, Hanoi dominated the entire match.
Twenty minutes into the match, striker Dinh Bao headed home to open the score when Binh Duong’s substitute goalkeeper Van Be made a positioning error.
Binh Duong’s situation got worse 10 minutes later when Trung Tin scored an own goal from Quang Tinh’s corner kick.
Quang Thang pulled one goal back for Binh Duong but their rivals were jubilant when they learnt HCMC had conceded a goal in another match. In higher spirits, they stepped up their attacks and made it 3-1 before the interval.
The scoring spree continued in the second half with Duy Long, Duc Anh, The Viet and Quang Tinh sealing a morale-boosting 7-1 victory. Quang Tinh won the Player-of-the-match award.
The huge win put Hanoi at the top of Group A with seven points. Binh Duong finished second with six points
