Nhan Dan - The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has asked the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to fix the dam leaks at the Song Tranh 2 power plant before April 15.
The requirement was made at a press conference on the issue held by the MOIT on March 28.
At the meeting, both Deputy Minister of the MOIT Hoang Quoc Vuong and Director of the National Department of Construction Appraisal, Le Quang Hung made assurances that the dam remains safe and stable. Authorised agencies toured the dam and found no abnormal cracks in its body.
Deputy Minister Vuong also said that the earthquake at 3.3 on the Richter scale in November 2011 had no effect on the dam which has been designed to withstand earthquakes at 5.5 on the Richter scale.
Despite the safety of the dam, the water leak to the downstream is deemed unacceptable. The EVN was requested to develop a master plan to address the problem before 31 July 2012 and the onset of the flood season and report to the Prime Minister, MOIT and relevant agencies on the result.
Water is leaking from joints, so-called ‘thermal gaps’ - small openings between concrete blocks to prevent cracking in the heat. Water flowed downstream with the discharge of 30 litres per second. The Management Board of Hydro power projects 3 had fixed the problem which reduced the discharge to 6-7 litres per second on March 27.
