HCMC – Song Lam Nghe An won the Super Cup for the fourth time after beating Navibank Saigon 3-1 in a penalty shootout at Vinh Stadium in the central city of Vinh on Saturday, picking up VND200 million in cash.

The game was level at 1-1 after normal play as Nguyen Hong Viet netted in the 53rd minute but Luong Van Duoc Em leveled for Saigon in the 63rd minute.

Backed by thousands of spectators, the home team controlled the first half while Saigon played defensively, relying on rare counter attacks.

In the second half, sub Viet opened for the V-League champions after receiving a neat pass from newcomer Hector H.K.Vaghaun before Duoc Em leveled the score.

In the shoot-out, Song Lam goalkeeper Nguyen Viet Nam stopped Duoc Em and Le Quang Long’s efforts to help his side to victory. Doan Viet Cuong also failed from the spot for Navibank while Bebbe M.Gustave Anicet missed for Song Lam. The runners-up received VND100 million in cash.

To mark the start of the football season, the annual Super Cup sees the previous season’s National Football Championship champions and National Cup winners.

Navibank Saigon won their first ever National Cup after beating Song Lam 3-0 at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium in August.

Last year, V-League champions Hanoi T&T won the Super Cup for the first time after beating National Cup winners Song Lam 4-2 in a penalty shootout at Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi.

Former The Cong, the Army team, won the first Super Cup in 1999. Song Lam took home the cup in 2000, 2001 and 2002. They were finally beaten by Hoang Anh Gia Lai, who held the title for the next two years. Binh Duong also grabbed the title twice.

It is the 13th year that the event has been organized by Tien Phong newspaper and the Vietnam Football Federation.

The Premier League 2012 will open on December 31 and the First Division Tournament will begin 24 hours earlier. The two leagues close on August 19 and 18, respectively.

* Newly-promoted team to the First Division Lam Dong shocked former V-League champions Becamex Binh Duong 5-3 in a penalty shootout in the southern province of Binh Duong in the preliminary round of the National Cup, which kicked off on Sunday.

The two teams drew 2-2 in official time, Nguyen Vu Phong opened the scoring for hosts Binh Duong in the 11th minute while Vo Trong Phu leveled for Lam Dong just three minutes later.

Lam Dong edged ahead in the 28th minute thanks to Soleiman and Kubheka Philani equalized for the home team in the 77th minute.

Ninh Binh and Khatoco Khanh Hoa also won through on penalty shootouts. Ninh Binh beat Tay Ninh 5-4 after a 0-0 draw while Khanh Hoa beat Dong Nai 4-2 after tying 1-1.

Can Tho also knocked out Quang Ninh Coal 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho after drawing 1-1. HCMC were knocked out by Haiphong at Thong Nhat Stadium 3-1.

Kienglongbank KG trounced Quang Nam 4-0 in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang while Dong Tam Long An Tiles were defeated 3-1 by SHB Danang at home.

In An Giang, SQC Binh Dinh won 2-0 thanks to a double from Dang Amaobi.

The National Cup 2012 has attracted 25 teams from the V-League and the First Division.
