Song Lam consolidate top spot after five-goal thriller

* Saigon Xuan Thanh won their first ever title after destroying Can Tho 7-3 in the First Division at Thong Nhat Stadium on Tuesday while Huda Hue move closer to the relegation area after drawing 3-3 with HCMC at Tu Do Stadium.

Despite enthusiastic backing from local spectators, Thanh Hoa lost a goal just three minutes into the game when Devon Hodges struck home for Song Lam right after his header hit the post.

However, Nguyen Cong Huy equalized for the home side in the 23rd minute and Omar helped Thanh Hoa go 2-1 up in the 45th minute with a terrific volley.

Song Lam dominated the second half and Hodges leveled matters in the 56th minute. Nguyen Quang Tinh hit the winner with just five minutes to go.

With the victory, leaders Song Lam have 42 points and sit seven points ahead of second-placed Hanoi T&T, who were held 1-1 at Ninh Binh.

In Nha Trang, SHB Danang lost to hosts Khanh Hoa. Agostinho opened for the hosts in just four minutes, Nicolas leveled in the 24th minute before M. Essuman hit a 55th minute winner.

Hanoi T&T and SHB Danang now have 35 points each; however, Hanoi T&T are ahead on goals scored and have a game in hand.

Dong Tam Long An Tiles enjoyed only their fifth victory after beating Hoang Anh Gia Lai 4-3 in a real thriller at their home ground. Bottom-placed Dong Tam Tiles still only have 21 points from 21 games.

Hanoi ACB fall into the relegation area after losing 2-0 to Becamex Binh Duong at Binh Duong Stadium. With the victory, Binh Duong go sixth on 31 points, the same points as fifth-placed Dong Thap, who drew 1-1 with Hoa Phat Hanoi at Hang Day Stadium.

Haiphong and Khanh Hoa are on 23 points, just one point ahead of 13th-placed Hanoi ACB.

Saigon XT are also promoted to the V-League with five to spare and they are still unbeaten this season.

Kesley Huynh Alves scored for the hosts in the 27th and 31st minutes and Nsi netted in the 40th and 54th minutes while O. Moses, Nguyen Anh Thang and Dang Ngoc Tung also grabbed goals for the home side in the 58th, 63rd and 87th minutes.

Tshamala Kabanga, Alex Oliveira and Iheruome were on target for Can Tho.

The HCMC-based team now have 49 points, 15 points ahead of second-placed Kienlongbank KG who beat Tay Ninh 2-1 at home.

Kienlongbank and An Giang, who earned a 3-1 victory over Dong Nai in Long Xuyen City, now have 34 points each but Kienlongbank are second on goal difference.

The second-placed team automatically go up with Saigon XT but the team finishing third can also still earn promotion to the V-League in a playoff with the V-League’s third-bottom placed team.

In the drop zone, Quang Nam beat Binh Dinh 3-0 in the central city of Tam Ky while Nam Dinh drew 2-2 with TDC Binh Duong in Binh Duong Province. Nam Dinh and Quang Nam have 21 points each, just one point ahead of 13th-placed Tay Ninh.

Both 11th-placed Nam Dinh, 12th-positoned Quang Nam and Tay Ninh are favorites for relegation. While it is only a matter of time before bottom-placed Huda Hue, on 13 points, are demoted.

Quang Ninh Coal are still fourth after drawing 2-2 with Hanoi at home. Quang Ninh are on 33 points, one point ahead of fifth-placed Binh Dinh.
