One positive sign is that rice production of the winter-spring crop in the Mekong River Delta may surpass the plan that predicts an excess of 3-3.5 million tonnes for export.

VFA forecasts that in 2012, Vietnam will ship around 6.5-7 million tonnes of rice overseas, including 3.5 million tonnes for the first six months of the year. However, VFA President Truong Thanh Phong said that in the current market context, exporting 2.3 million tonnes of rice from the winter-spring crop to reach that six month goal would be difficult. For this reason, VFA scheduled the purchase of 1 million tonnes rice for reserves within three months. The association also pledged keep rice prices stable at VND 5,000 per kilogram
