Police in a northern Vietnamese province have recommended a charge of "gambling" against three senior officials and a customs agent who were caught red-handed while playing a card game earlier this month.
Le Anh Cuong, deputy director of the Yen Bai Province Finance Department, was caught gambling at a hotel April 12 with Nguyen Van Luyen, deputy director of Bao Viet Insurance; Vu Tuan Khanh, director of the provincial lottery company; and Pham Hong Thanh, a local customs official.
Cuong, Luyen, and Khanh have been suspended pending investigations.
More than VND100 million (US$5,000) was seized from the table, according to news website VnExpress.
Pham Duy Cuong, the chairman of the province People’s Committee, told the news site Thursday authorities “will deal with the case following legal procedures and not cover up anything.”
Elsewhere in Vietnam, the trial of six people is awaited -- including three former provincial officials -- in the Mekong Delta’s Soc Trang Province, after they were found gambling billions of dong on Chinese chess games last December.
