Participants in the seminar heard 28 reports by the country’s leading economic experts, policy-makers and business leaders, which underscored both Chu Lai’s achievements and shortcomings to help develop the zone in the future.
VietNamNet Bridge – A scientific seminar was held in the central province of Quang Nam on December 18 to discuss the development of the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone.
This was the first Open Economic Zone established by the Prime Minister in June 2003. After six years of operation, the zone has attracted 52 projects with a total registered capital of US$929 million, helping generate jobs for more than 7,000 labourers.
Chu Lai has greatly contributed to the socio-economic development of the province, which now has a total registered capital valued at US$4.15 billion this year, accounting for 28.3 percent of all such capital nationwide.
However, Chu Lai’s achievements have not yet matched its potential. Currently, the zone still lacks transparency and incentive policies to attract investment and its infrastructure has not been adequately developed.
The seminar was co-organised by the Communist Review, the Quang Nam provincial Party Committee and the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
