An old woman leaned on a stick as she entered the bus and looked for a seat. There was no empty seat at that peak hour and none of the crowd of young people gave up their seats to the woman. Some looked at her with sympathy, but none of them stood up.

This is a scene that plays out regularly along bus routes. The young people sit and old people stand. Societal experts aver that young people have become insensitive in the modern day.

In the current modern busy age, when people need to pay attention to many things, they also become indifferent to many things. Many drive away child-beggars or refuse to assist an elderly person who falls down in the street.

Over the last few months, video clips of female students fighting have been forwarded to many people. After viewing the clip, many people have expressed concern about the rise of school violence and also heavily criticized the students. However, as educators have pointed out, the biggest problem here is insensitivity. A lot of people stood to witness the fight, but none intervened to stop it or call the police.

A recent video from the Internet shows a female student in Nghe An province being beaten by other students. Prior to that, another clip showed a student of Tran Nhan Tong School in Hanoi being attacked by classmates, and yet another film shows the now famous punch-fest between female students of Le Quy Don High School in Ha Dong District.

The common denominator in these clips is that, although many people watched the fighting, none stopped the violence. Some students even shouted to encourage the combatants.

If someone had tried to stop the fight or called the police or school officials for assistance, many argue, then these conflicts could not have taken place.

Some psychologists report that, nowadays, young people can easily access modern means of entertainment, such as the Internet and online games. Children and young people see violence in games and want to imitate this in real life. Other scientific studies show there is no correlation between violence in the media and real life brutality.

Over the last year, newspapers have reported many cases blaming online games as the “culprit” of many crimes. A student killed a classmate because of online games, another murdered people to get money to play games, while a child killed the father just because he forbade playing online games.

Educators have pointed out, moreover, that it is the bad behavior of adults that creates violent children.

One year ago, a primary school teacher raped a student right at school. Also in 2009, a history teacher of Nguyen Khuyen High School in Quang Nam School beat a student, who was then hospitalized.

According to VnMedia, the most important thing that needs to be done now in order to stop school violence is that to treat the “disease” of insensitivity. Only when people are ready to fight violence will the problem be solved.
