Viet Nam to compete in 10th Asian Individual Chess Champs

The Viet Nam chess team will compete in the 10th Asian Individual Chess Championships, which will be held in the holy city of Mashhad in northeast Iran on May 1-11.

The team will include the nation's top players, including grandmasters Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Hoang Bao Tram and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung.

Top player Le Quang Liem who won the recent Aeroflot Open will not take part in this event. He finished fifth in the Asian championship last year.

The US$65,000 tournament will be conducted according to the Swiss System, with competition over nine rounds, with the top four qualifying for the 2011 World Cup.

The first Asian Individual Blitz Championships will take place alongside the main tournaments.

After the Asian event, Viet Nam will head to Tagayta in Philippines on May 23-31 to take part in the Zone 3.3 Zonal Championships 2011 for Open and Women and the Asian Youth Chess Championships on May 14-22. In June, they will compete in Asian U-20 Chess Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Southeast Asian tourney.

Top national striker Tran Thi Kim Hong sidelined with injury

Top national striker Tran Thi Kim Hong has been sidelined for a year after suffering a torn knee ligament during the national women's football championship last week.

The 26-year-old striker will miss the second round of the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers when Viet Nam are to play Jordan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Thailand on June 3-12.

She also has had to delay her wedding while she undergoes treatment.

Hong said she would spend her next year in rehabilitation and work as a cosmetic make-up artist.

VFF appoints new coach for national men's U-16 team

The Viet Nam Football Federation has appointed Nguyen Hai Bien as coach of the national men's U-16 team.

Bien, 41, will lead the team in the ASEAN Football Federation U-16 Championship in Laos on July 7-17 and the Asian Football Confederation Championship qualifiers in September.

The former The Cong (former-Army team) winger replaces team coach Hoang Van Phuc, who is busy managing First Division Ha Noi V&V team.

VN martial artists to attend World Taekwondo tourney

Vietnamese martial artists will head to Gyeongju in South Korea to compete in the World Taekwondo Championship on May 1-6.

Truong Ngoc De, general secretary of Viet Nam Taekwondo Federation said Vietnamese athletes will try their best to qualify for the London Olympics 2012.

At present, the team including outstanding talents such as Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao is training in South Korea.

According to the World Taekwondo Federation, the six-day event will draw 1,022 martial artists and 706 officials from 144 nations and territories in the world. They will compete for 16 sets of medals in the men's and women's divisions.
