The conference themed ‘The future we want’ will focus on reforming institutions concerned with sustainable development, developing green economies and reducing poverty.
The world’s leaders will set out targets and new criteria for sustainable development and examine measures to eliminate unsustainable models of production and consumption.
On the first day of the conference, eight banks, including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank, pledged US$175 billion to develop sustainable transport systems over the next ten years.
On the eve of the conference, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said the Rio+20 conference is a opportunity to place the world on the path to sustainable development, where there is a balance between economies, society, the environment and welfare systems.
