Total rice output throughout the country will hit a record high of more than 42 million tonnes in 2011, an increase of 2 million tonnes from the previous year, according to a preliminary estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for three rice crops this year.
Also according to the preliminary estimate, total rice area for the whole year will reach more than 7.7 million hectares, up more than 200,000 hectares. Productivity is estimated at 55 quintal per hectare.
Until mid-September, the country cultivated more than 1.6 million hectares, a year-on-year increase of only 1 percent. Of which, northern provinces fulfilled an area of more than 1.3 million hectares, as much as 95.4 percent of that of the same period last year.
