Rice exports reach 1.85 million tonnes in first quarter

(VOV) - Vietnam’s rice exports reached 1.85 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2011, earning a total of US$884 million, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

Up to the end of March, farmers in the Mekong River Delta provinces cultivated 1.5 million hectares of rice for the 2010-2011 winter-spring crop, 105 percent of the set target, according to statistics from the Cultivation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Farmers in the region produced an output of over 6.37 million tonnes in the winter-spring crop. For this year’s summer-autumn crop, farmers will grow around 217,000 hectares of rice.

Over the past week, the price of rice in Mekong River Delta localities increased slightly by VND200-300 per kilo. The price of regular rice in the region often hovered around VND5,700-5,850 per kilo while the price of five percent broken rice was VND7,650-7,800 per kilo and the price of 25 percent broken rice was VND7,450-7,600.
