Nhan Dan - Vietnam expects to export around 1.1 million tonnes of rice in the first quarter of 2012, a decrease of 1.8 million tonnes compared to the same period last year.
The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) said the big drop is in line with trends on the world market. Rice exports from Thailand and the United States also fell by 53% and 30%, respectively.
In addition, low-grade Vietnamese rice is facing stiff competition from India, Pakistan and Myanmar, with reports showing Vietnam has won no contracts to export low-grade rice in the first two months of 2012.
Another reason for the decline is that traditional importers of Vietnamese rice are diversifying their sources.
