Dr Huynh Thanh Dat, deputy rector of Viet Nam National University of HCM City, said the network was composed of three universities in Cambodia, four in Laos and four in Viet Nam.
The universities in Cambodia include the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Royal University of Economics and Law and University of Health Sciences, and in Laos, the National University of Laos, Champasak University, Souphanouvong University and Savannakhet University.
Viet Nam National University of Ha Noi, Da Nang University, Hue University and Viet Nam National University of HCM City will also be part of the network.
After the network is operational, an exchange of students and lecturers will then occur, according to speakers.
The network is expected to help develop high-quality human resources for the three countries, and promote further scientific research.
Dr Boupong Keor-odom, dean of Savannakhet University, proposed that undergraduate students from Laos and Cambodia study at Viet Nam's universities, and that the new network create a common accreditation scheme for study programmes.
Under the collaborative network, teaching staff from the respective universities would give lectures at other universities, he said.
Phan Thanh Binh, rector of Viet Nam National University of HCM City, said the co-operation among the universities was essential and proposed that online universities also be developed.
