The Hanoitimes - 36,500 flights carrying more than 3.24 million passengers arrived and departed Hanoi in 2011, said the Hanoi Customs Department.

The number of international arrivals to Hanoi reached nearly 1.9 million in 2011, a year-on-year increase of 11 percent, according to the capital city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

They included passengers on domestic flights as well as overseas Vietnamese returning to the homeland and travelers leaving Hanoi for countries and territories around the globe.

Most foreigners entering Hanoi in 2011 came from China , Japan , the Republic of Korea , Europe and North America . The number of arrivals was up by 640,000 over 2010, and the number of flights rose by 9,500.

This is thanks to the Hanoi tourism promotion campaign that has introduced its new products and services to international friends. In addition, more direct air routes have been launched to connect Hanoi to many cities around the world.

The city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism is drawing up plans to boost tourism development in craft villages and cultural heritage sites and promote tours to places of interest in Lao Cai, Quang Ninh and Ninh Binh provinces.

Besides, the city will also carry out activities to attract more tourists, including opening more walking streets in Hoan Kiem District, organising international tourism fairs, and holding the 11th meeting of the Council for Promotion of Tourism in Asia .

Next year, Hanoi will continue to enhance administrative reform and improve the customs sector’s operational efficiency to meet requirements for international integration in line with Vietnam ’s WTO commitments.
