Authorities in Quang Binh central province on Tuesday decided to temporarily grant fisherman Nguyen Van Dien, who caught a sea lion off Hon La Bay Monday, the right to raise the animal.

The decision came after Dien demanded to be paid VND20 million (US$1,000) and TV coverage in return for releasing the animal into the sea as earlier requested by the authorities.
The sea lion, which looks like a seal, is now living in a fishpond in Dien’s house and has attracted huge crowds of curious people.
A local task force also agrees to let Dien seek financial assistance from relevant authorities to raise the animal in better condition.
Last October, a seal reportedly died of brain tumor some time after being raised by the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute which, after several negotiations, took it from the fisherman who caught it.
