President meets with EAS participating leaders

State President Nguyen Minh Triet on Oct. 30 received the Republic of Korea (RoK) President and the Japanese Prime Minister, who are in Hanoi for the 17 th ASEAN Summit and related summits.

At his meeting with RoK President Lee Myung-bak, President Triet suggested that the two countries exchange more high-level visits to strengthen trust and seek bilateral cooperation opportunities.

“ Vietnam wants to see more RoK investment in infrastructure construction and hi-tech and boost people-to-people exchange in order to deepen the bilateral ties further,” he said.

President Lee informed his host that Vietnam has the largest number of labourers in the RoK and that the RoK had accomplished procedures for its imports of Thanh Long (Dragon fruit) from Vietnam .

The two sides also talked about measures to deal with matters of Vietnamese brides in the RoK.

Talking with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan , President Triet affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to promoting friendship and cooperation with Japan and looks towards a strategic partnership with it.

He wished the Japanese businesspeople to pump more investment into big projects in Vietnam , emphasizing that they are always welcomed and given conditions to do business in Vietnam .

Prime Minister Naoto Kan congratulated the successes of the 17 th ASEAN Summit and related summits hosted by Vietnam and spoke highly of Vietnam ’s potential and growing importance in the region and international arena.

He reiterated Japan ’s commitment to maintain ODA and step up technological transfer to Vietnam .

He said the Japanese investors are especially interested in infrastructure projects, such as expressways, urban railways and water supply facilities, in Vietnam .

On the day, President Triet also met with the leaders of East Asia Summit (EAS) participating countries.

He congratulated the success of the EAS Summit with the adoption of the Hanoi Declaration on the Commemoration of the Fifth Anniversary of East Asia Summit and the decision to invite Russia and the US to participate in the EAS.

President Triet described the outcomes of the EAS and other ASEAN summits with its dialogue partners as a vivid manifestation of ASEAN’s consistent policy to facilitate the deeper engagement and positive contributions in addressing regional issues towards the common goal of peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

He reaffirmed Vietnam ’s commitment to enhance relations with countries in the world both bilaterally and multilaterally and contribute to the ever-developed relations between ASEAN and its dialogue partners.

The president looked forwards to the continued support and assistance from all dialogue partners for the realization of ASEAN Community Building and for the association’s key role in the regional fora and its centrality in an evolving regional architecture./.
