A group of archaeologists has just found many precious exhibits reflecting architecture and art of the Ly Dynasty in Dam Pagoda in Nam Son Commune, Bac Ninh Province.
Built in 1086 during the Ly dynasty, Dam Pagoda or Dai Phuc Tu includes three stone towers carved with dragons and 12 houses (the so-called “12 Castles”). During the Le Dynasty, the pagoda was repaired. However, the pagoda was destroyed by time and wars, except the stone stairs and pillars, the statue of Queen Mother Y LAN and King Ly Thanh Tong.
To create favourable conditions for repairing the Pagoda, the Bac Ninh Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in association with the Vietnam Archaeology Institute and the Vietnam Buddhism Association, decided to excavate 300 sq.m of the pagoda. After one month of excavation, archaeologists found many precious stone, pottery and terracotta exhibits that clearly reflect techniques of the Ly Dynasty.
The findings are important for research and the repair of the Dam Pagoda.
